If you love birdwatching, the Po Delta is your paradise. Over 300 species of birds, both resident and migratory, populate this territory. We are not experts, but over the years we have learned something. Here are our tips.
The pink flamingos
They are the main attraction, and for good reason. Seeing them in flight, with that bright pink against the blue sky, is an emotion. You can find them especially in the salt pans of Comacchio and in the Sacca di Scardovari. Early morning is the best time.
The herons
Grey herons, little egrets, purple herons. They are everywhere, elegant and patient. You see them fishing along the canals, motionless for whole minutes, then darting lightning-fast on the water.
Where to go
The Ca’ Mello Oasis is perfect for beginners: observation huts, walkways, information panels. Wilder is the Isola della Batteria, reachable by boat.
For the more experienced, the Valli di Comacchio offer incredible sightings, but a guide is needed.
What to bring
Binoculars, of course. But also patience, silence, and the willingness to stay still. Birds reward those who know how to wait.
You don’t need to be an ornithologist. Just love nature and know how to respect it.
