Nature and Delta

Lagoons and valleys to explore: a guide for nature lovers

The Po Delta is not just a river meeting the sea. It’s a labyrinth of lagoons, valleys, canals and islands. A water world that changes with the seasons, tides and light.

The fishing valleys

The valleys are water mirrors surrounded by embankments, used for centuries for fish farming. Today they are oases of biodiversity. Eels, mullets and sea breams coexist with herons, cormorants and, if you’re lucky, some otters.

Some valleys can be visited with local guides. It’s an experience that changes the way you see this territory.

The Sacca di Scardovari

It’s the largest lagoon in the Delta. A timeless place, where fishermen collect mussels and clams with the same gestures as always. You can visit it by boat, at dawn, when the colors are incredible.

The islands

In the Delta there are islands reachable only by boat. Some are uninhabited, others host small fishing communities. Visiting them is like taking a journey through time.

Practical tips

Bring rubber boots, especially if you visit in autumn or spring. Water is everywhere. And bring your camera: every corner is a postcard.
